When a crisis happens, what comes next matters.

Every day, someone reaches a breaking point. A lost job. A relationship ending. A personal crisis with nowhere safe to turn. For many, those moments end in a hospital room, a police interaction, or a night without shelter... not because they needed emergency intervention, but because there was nowhere else to go.

YSSN's Safe Spaces Program offers something different: a free, short-term, home-like safe space to land for people experiencing crisis can:

  • Stabilize safely with  24/7 professional support 
  • Regain confidence through  individualized supports and planning 
  • Find a way forward with practical help and  connections to longer-term supports 

Unlike a shelter or hospital ward, Safe Spaces provides individualized, ongoing support in a home-like environment.

Building on what works

Today, YSSN operates 12 Safe Spaces across York Region, providing people in personal crisis with a safe place to stabilize and find a way forward.

Backed by more than 25 years of leadership in community crisis response and 40+ years as a trusted social service hub, YSSN brings deep experience to this work. Safe Spaces is also part of a connected community response, with support from partners including York Regional Police, Krasman Centre, CMHA York Region South Simcoe, LOFT Community Services, Mackenzie Health, and other community organizations.

Now we're ready to expand

YSSN is raising $1.5 million over three years to add four new Safe Spaces in York Region and where the need is greatest, bringing this proven model to more people.

With your support, at least 50 more people each year can have somewhere safe to turn when they need it most.
