Bill of rights

At YSSN, our promise to you is captured in our Bill of Rights. This is more than just words on a page—it forms the foundation that guides how every YSSN employee works. Each new team member reviews this Bill of Rights when they join YSSN, and all staff revisit it annually to ensure we consistently uphold these values in everything we do.

We encourage open, respectful conversations, and we rely on polite, non-threatening communication from everyone involved to maintain a safe and welcoming space..

When you access our services, you have the right to:

  • Be treated with courtesy, dignity, and respect
  • Be treated equitably no matter your skin colour, ethnicity, creed, age, gender identity or expression, family status, or ability
  • A safe environment, free from abuse, harm, neglect or retaliation
  • Be treated with compassion and empathy
  • Be accepted for who you are, and where you are in your recovery or life journey
  • Receive information in a way that is easy to understand and to have your questions answered
  • Get the YSSN supports and services that you are eligible to receive
  • Set goals for yourself, make your own decisions, and change your mind about them
  • Help plan your transition from YSSN services and get information about other resources
  • Meet privately with your worker, with what you share staying confidential unless you give permission or the law requires us to share it
  • Ask to see your personal health information, kept in YSSN paper or computer files
  • Disagree with your worker and complain about YSSN services without it affecting how you are treated
  • Have an advocate or legal representative help you if you feel these rights were not respected
