Domicile / Up Stories / Real Stories

Share your Story

Share your story, on your own terms, and help inspire and make a difference in the lives of peers facing the same or similar challenges in your community.

To get a better sense of the kind of stories we’re looking for, you can read personal blog posts written by community members.

“I am a woman of color, survivor of domestic violence, refugee claimant, single mother, internationally trained professional, ambitious, empowered entrepreneur who spent more than a decade on a waiting list for affordable housing. Some of the community services I utilized included, but not limited to, the Domestic Abuse Sexual Assault Care Centre of York Region, Women’s College Hospital, Women’s Support Network, Women Centre of York Region and YSSN. I am thrilled to be such an active part of the York Region community and I have a lot to say about people’s ability to get the services they need.” – Carleen M.

  1. Talk about a challenging time in your life, how you overcame it and the services and supports that helped you
  2. Focus on a funny moment that changed the way you think or feel about a situation
  3. Share a lesson you learned that changed the direction of your life
  4. Discuss how learning from other people helped you on your journey
  5. Show how you were able to deal with setbacks while still striving for success
  6. Reflect on a moment that defined who you are and who you’re becoming

Clothing: Come as you are and wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable. We suggest that you avoid clothes with stripes, excessive patterns, graphics or words (they don’t always appear well on camera).

Location: Find a well-lit space with natural light inside your home. It’s best to choose an uncluttered space, if possible.

Settings: We suggest using your cell phone’s better rear camera. Make sure you wipe it down first before starting to record.

Sound: Minimize background noise. No music and avoid running AC or fans while filming. Close windows to avoid outside noise.

Stabilize: Set your phone at eye level on a piece of furniture or a tripod and press record.

We recognize that telling your story is a deeply personal decision and isn’t always an easy thing to do.
